I can’t peruse my Instagram feed without seeing countless pictures of #BlackExcellenceAbroad. It really makes me wonder if, in this day and age, it’s imperative that you have a professional iPhonographer tag-along on all transatlantic excursions.

“When I started my first business, I constantly read books, magazines, attended conferences, and networking events and to my dismay, I didn’t see too many people who looked like me or who was my age – and that is why we created this organization,” says Brandon Miller, president of The Black Burdell, an organization on a mission to bridge black entrepreneurs to resources, scholarships, and networks.

Supporting current and aspiring African American entrepreneurs for the past year, The Black Burdell, Inc. announces its winner for the 2016 inaugural “Cultivating Entrepreneurs Scholarship.” The recipient of this scholarship has won a $1,000 scholarship. This novel scholarship was designed specifically to help young entrepreneurs afford the rising cost of education and help them form, grow, and develop their business at the same time.

Young entrepreneurs at Georgia Tech have a new opportunity to get resources for their ideas through an alumni-launched venture called The Black Burdell. The Black Burdell was founded last year by Georgia Tech students and graduates to provide resources for young African-American entrepreneurs. The organization, which aims to be “changing the face of entrepreneurship,” is now accepting applications for its first scholarship from students attending either Georgia Tech or Georgia State University. 

Based in the Mecca of African-American-owned tech firms and the city that boasts the second highest percentage of African-American-owned businesses, The Black Burdell aims to nurture the many seeds of black-owned businesses. Founded by three African American Entrepreneurs from the Georgia Institute of Technology – Brandon Miller, Darren Sanders and Henderson Johnson II are utilizing their recently founded nonprofit to promote, support and cultivate black student entrepreneurs.
